Watching it again and again...

It's reading week and I've been typing up my construction textbook readings in preparation of my upcoming midterm...and on the side I've played New Breadth of Love (again), well not the entire series but the last 8 episodes (that is where the series really picks up). I play it sort of in the background on my ipod touch and set it next to my macbook screen and I put my headphones on and 'glance' over for the good parts. It works well, it keeps me awake while I read my textbook... The episodes (especially the final scene) are so classic that I could watch it again and again...The ending is a happy one for all except one pair and so it is satisfying to watch. And when you only see the last few episodes you sort of forget about those forgotten underlying problems that were unresolved :) I recently watched Slumdog Millionaire and the final scenes of both film and series takes place at a subway/train station and end just as happily with liplocking :D What a coincidence!

I was playing the final scene today in the car on my drive home...kind of sketchy and dangerous but my inability to watch it made me listen carefully and I realized that there isn't a whole lot of dialogue in the final scenes after discovering the magazine cover. The emotions were played out solely of their facial expressions, actions, and the background music. The only exception was the flashback. Otherwise the scene remains speechless until just before they meet with the stranger asking for directions. I have to say that that was well put together as it bought the viewer into the series and allowed the viewer (me) to cool down and clear my mind and deeply immerse myself into the series for the final lines.

Anxiously Anticipating...

It is sad to say that none of the shows recently broadcasted in HK are sparking my attention like last years when I was incredibly into the Seventh Day, Moonlight Resonance, War of In-Laws 2, Forensic Heroes 2 and even somewhat Survivor's Law 2. Of the series aired since September 2008, only Last One Standing is on my list...

However, there is a series that I'm highly anticipating to be aired... Burning Flame 3 with Kevin, Bosco, and Myolie...but no official release date has been set...probably (hopefully) in the spring...April/May

There are two Raymond Lam series that are to be filmed this year... Picking Star of Adventure which has just begun filming and will finish filming in May when Ray begins to film another series The Youth Grows Again

I'm more hyped for Picking Star of Adventure because Bosco is also in it. I read today that Ray is supposed to be the loyal lover and Bosco is the player...This series reminds me of New Breath of Love, but this time there will be more HK actors/actresses than Mainland but I like the crossover, a few familiar faces but also a few fresh faces. It supposed to be a 'Grand Production' so I don't think it will air until near the TVB anniversary (October/November) seeing how many series TVB still has to air. I can already say that Raymond will (finally) get "Best Actor" this year.

Krawchuk Memories

I did go back to take some pictures last Saturday of the school. It was so sunny and warm on Saturday, sort of the calm before our rain/ice/snow storm that you're getting now. I've uploaded the pics to my web album at http://picasaweb.google.com/RichardChiang1288/Krawchuk?feat=directlink

While I was there I met a few other strangers who either went to the school or had kids who went to the school. It was strange because I never really expected anyone else to be there. There were two men in their 30s who went to the school and there were two senior men who had children who went to the school. We talked for a couple of minutes and I guess cause it was in the paper, it was highly publicized and people knew about it. One of the seniors picked up a red brick as a souvenir. The place is supposed to just be flattened for a playground.

I was talking to my studio friend about the demolition and we were talking about those Scooters too! Totally unsafe as our fingers were run over and we did silly things on them (swinging each other around and letting go)...I think they ban them from elementary schools.

Building Blocks of Life

On Wednesday, I watched the finale of Building Blocks of Life...the series was okay, a 3.75/5...Of course, I was intrigued by the theme of architecture. I thought the design studios were very true and I liked the connection but I don't think the architectural ideas were portrayed very well and accurately. Perhaps it is because of the difference in cultures, I'm being educated quite differently from the ideas that they are presenting. Because North American cities are facing issues with sprawl, we are 'into' the densification of our cities and generating vibrancy. In the series, they encouraged low density housing in the new developments of China (near HK) because they are incredibly dense in HK. However, I don't think that is a good long term solution because in NA we are experiencing many problems due to sprawl. Also, the human population is only going to get larger and so sprawling is not a solution. Instead, they should be developing smart superstructures that minimizes the impact on the environment and maintaining quality of life. That is kind of the theme of my studio this year (over population and saturation) so I'm kind of biased. It is a challenge that we will eventually face.

The Ending...

Contrary to the pace of the entire series, the ending felt quite rushed as it had to tell the fate of all four couples and I think that is the reason why I gave it only a 3.75/5. Only the last 20-30 minutes were dedicated to Tsui Hoi and Jing Wei. That is plenty of time to resolve the unsolved issues but instead this time was wasted playing chase.

The series never revealed what they each wished for on the bridge. I presume that Tsui Hoi's wish would be about staying with Jing Wei together forever and that could have been used by him to win her back. Tsui Hoi did finish the painting of "Sui Ngai Lum" (Little Irene) with I presume the supplies that Jing Wei bought for him, however, he never had the chance to give it to her. Finally, what about Tsui Hoi's phobia or disbelief in marriage? I find that was the biggest problem that caused them to split in the first place and was never brought up again! There was no official 'point of realization' for Tsui Hoi.

I guess, "I'll never let you leave me again" implies that Tsui Hoi is willing to have Jing Wei as a life long companion which sort of implies that he'll marry her :) Though it wasn't spelled out completely, I think the meaning of marriage is there. Honestly, there would be no point of marriage if one is not willing to commit to the other for the rest of their life. I think commitment is more important than the marriage itself.

All the ??? I had were more or less resolved indirectly in the ending rather than concrete...BUT this type of ending remained suspenseful up until the very last minute so there is appreciation to be discovered as I disected through this series. Just like The Seventh Day, New Breath of Love is a totally different series from what I've been accustomed to so it took me some time to discover the value in behind it. After disecting the ending, I've decided to bump it to 4/5 for the suspensful happy ending :)

The series portrayed the issues and problems that confront lovers; age, sense of security, family, illness, honesty. Contrary to most other series, I expected Lisa to use her heart disease to threaten Tsui Hoi to stay with her but she decided to let go and wished Jing Wei and Tsui Hoi all the best. Johnson who is her secret admirer stayed with Lisa without asking for anything in return. Too bad she never actually accepted him.

Most Resolved - Ming Ging and Sophia
Sophia was honest and told Ming Ging the truth though she was truly in love with him. She attempts to hook up Jing Wei with Ming Ging. Because of the fall of her family business, she felt that she was not fit to be his wife. Ming Ging finally realized that he cares for Sophia and uses his persistence and determination to win her back.

New Breath of Love - 'Sui Ngai Lum'

This is a painting by French Impressionist painter Renoir. I learned about him in my Visual Literacy class last year. The painting is called Irene Cahen d'Anvers AKA Little Irene. This oil on canvas painting was painted in 1880. According to New Breath of Love, the girl in the picture is Irene, an 8 year old daughter of a wealthy man who hired Renoir to paint a portrait of his daughter.

Jing Wei is Tsui Hoi's (Raymond) Sui Ngai Lum which translates into 'Little Irene' in English refering to this painting. This painting appears slightly different from the one shown on screen...probably because of some copyright issue, they couldn't use the real one...but who knows...

New Breath of Love

I'll start by saying that I watched this series because of the cast, in particular Raymond. Since his hair-do is the same as in Heart of Greed, I assume that the two series were filmed around the same time. After his tragic death in HOG, I just wanted to see him with the one he loves (in the series).

It was very hard for me to rate this series...I can't give it an overall score so I'll attempt to break it into separate parts...

Casting - 5/5 - Though I was only aware of the existence of Raymond and Alex, it was easy to accept those who were new to me. Raymond did an awesome job playing the playful and creative character of 'Tsui Hoi' while Alex's appearance and tone fit the quiet and accountable personality of 'Ming Ging'. Tammy Chen (played Jing Wai) is a pretty girl, she reminds me of one of the 2R HK pop singers (who knows what happened to them). She fits her role as a goodie good girl but with a hidden personality. Perhaps because she is pretty so I would expect her to be more naughty. Every other character was played by fitting actors/actresses.

Setting/Filming - 5/5 - The Shanghai setting was really cool a depart from the HK backdrop common in TVB series. Love of the Aegean Sea and Channel A both take place in Shanghai. I'm planning to go to Shanghai in 2010 after I graduate to go see the Expo. I really liked the reflective camera angles that reveal both side, I think it was used a lot in the fitness center on the mirrors.

WARNING - SPOILERS BELOW!

Storyline - 3.5/5 - I really don't know, it was a nice story but perhaps the pacing threw everything off. There were about 4 couples in total (Ray and Tammy's being the main), so it was interesting but it also made the overall story feel kind of fragmented because it jumped from one to another and you kind of have to wait and you can't guess who's turn is it next (unlike The Seventh Day) so patience is required. The series explored one main underlying problem in each relationship so there is diversity. There were some down times and many 'false alarms', however, when something did finally happen, it was very good. COME ON, it took Jing Wai long enough to accept Tsui Hoi! But I was really happy for them when they stayed together over night :) Though the characters were all related in an almost impossible way, the story still seemed kind of fragmented. The series kept jumping back and forth between too many different stories and failed to really relate them. Also there were times when I expected something bad to happen (like Jing Wai getting fired or Sophia and Lisa going crazy after being dumped). I didn't predict the abduction...that was kind of random...but at least something happened...HOWEVER, I really enjoyed the changes that occurred in people's personality's. I like both mother's role, though I like Jing Wai's mom better, she went from extremely paranoid to approachable. Tsui Hoi and Jing Wai changed for each other and so did Jing Mun and "Ah Gum".

Characters - 4/5 - I liked the range and diversity of each character's role. Ray's role is a cross between La Femme Desparado 'Chai Foon' and Heart of Greed 'Alfred Ching Leung'. It isn't as 'bad' as Heart of Greed but wasn't as 'good' as La Femme Desparado. Though I don't like two-timers, I have to admit they do exist in this world. I appreciated Sing Hung's affection towards Ching Ling (though she betrayed him). There were some that I hated too...namely Richard (the main antagonist) and Jing Wai's two co-workers. One was pissing me off because she was trying to get Tsui Hoi's attention. The other was a wolf in disguise. However, nothing was really done to settle them and it just died off naturally. Even Richard wasn't as 'bad' in the kidnapping as he could have been, no guns or knives. He was also naive to think that they weren't goin to call the cops. I guess it made no sense to rape a girl that you've been been dating already. It was hard for me to know what exactly he was after, love or money? Was he ever in love with her? Did he just want money all along? In the middle, Jing Wai was getting all stressed because of her and Tsui Hoi's relationship but near the end, she seemed pretty calm about it when they 'broke up'. To me it felt kind of awkward that she changed so much in so little time. Though it seems as though the comments I made appear quite negative, I think they are more realistic solutions to problems faced by human beings and though they are not as dramatic, I still appreciate their new approach.

The Ending - 3.75/5 - It was sad that 'Ah Gum' died, he was so young....but at least he will always be in the heart of 'Jing Mun'. Sophia and 'Ming Ging's' relationship developed quite well. I'm glad that Sing Hung found Ching Ling. I actually wasn't quite as satisfied with Tsui Hoi and Jing Wai's relationship. As the MAIN couple of the ENTIRE series, I was expecting a bit more compared to the others. Perhaps an extra 5 minutes of what it happens after the subway scene. How about their wedding?...A resolution to Tsui Hoi's disbelief in marriage or phobia towards driving? Those things were kind of left up in the air. Then perhaps a 5 years later scene with everyone together again.

Final words - Patience is essential to enjoy this series. Just hang in there, cause the best is still to come...

I'm finally 20

It's my special day today! I went out with a few friends, bowling, pool then a game of ping pong at my friend's house. I got lots of facebook book messages today!

Boxing Day

This morning, Henry and I got up at 6 and went to Futureshop/Best Buy/ Polo Park. I spent $200 at Futureshop. I bought an external 320 GB portable hard drive for $100, a wireless laser mouse for Johnny $15, a 8GB SD Card $10, a 4 GB sony memory stick/card for $25 (for henry's PSP), 2GB Ram for my macbook $25. Best Buy was sold out of a wireless router ($20). It is something I wanted but it isn't something I need cause we already have one but the range isn't all that good, Having said that I am still able to pick up a decent connection from my work station in the basement. I saw the man grab the last one and you know that you can sense when someone else wants what you have. lol After gazing at him for a few seconds (he was indecisive but our presence made his decision), we just walked away. I went to Mexx and Sport Chek at Polo while Henry went to EB Games. The sales at the mall weren't that good, I bought a T-shirt from Mexx. It has been 50% off the entire store for a week and boxing day was no different. I bought 2 dress shirts (really nice), a sweater, and a tie last weekend because of their 50% sale. I also bought a belt 2 weeks ago but it was only 30% off at the time. After discounts, the shirts were $35, the sweater was $22.50, tie was $30, and the belt was $24. It was good to get the belt hen I did because they didn't have my size when it was 50% off. The shirts are black with grey stripes and a the second is a grey and black striped pattern. I can't describe them but they are really nice. I got complements when I wore the first one to work. The second is slim fit and is more for formal occasions. I really like Mexx clothes, though they are expensive, they are my favourite name brand because they fit me well. I like Calvin Klein as well for that reason. I don't like Tommy Hilfiger, because even their small is too large for me. I bought two short sleeve shirts last summer, my friend works at the store, they were 40% off, but they are a bit loose fitting. I prefer slim fitting (not tight) but I like to go for the tailored look. I only buy these clothes because of the sale. I can't afford $70 for a dress shirt, just yet, lol :)

Merry Christmas Everyone!

Well, we had turkey last night on Christmas Eve, our 'western celebration', just with my family. Then today, my cousins came over with their little puppy, Zack...it's a black pomeranian, and he was a really nice dog. I'm not a dog fanatic but I really liked him. He just sat in your lap and allowed you to pet him as you pleased and he never barked once which was amazing because it was his first time in my house and the first time he met us. We had spring rolls that night and the dog really wanted one but we didn't give him any cause it is greasy. So when it was time to go Zack didn't want to (the house smelled like spring rolls) and he wanted to stay. Zack would follow them to the door then run back into the living room and then they would call him and he would come but run back into the living room again. My cousins pretended to leave, like open the door, but it just stayed. My dad had to grab him but he struggling to get free. He was really funny!!! Too bad we forgot to take pictures...

Final Presentations

I had my final studio presentations today afternoon...they went quite well and then we went to Red Cactus as a studio group to unwind.

I just had the toughest weekend of the year...After a 3 hour exam on Friday morning (my one and only :D), things just worsened and intensified. I've had basically no real sleep or meals, sleeping over at school on a couch and I had a nasty cold. My other sick friend and I went through 3 boxes of kleenex over three days. I have bloody red eyes.

The studio was so cold that I brought in my own space heater, along with a sleeping bag and a blow dryer to dry glue quicker...Elmers is great modeling glue btw.

I'm not completely off the hook yet, I still have portfolios to make but that isn't stressful, just pricey to print and bind. My final studio project was over $200.

Ultimate Crime Fighter (UCF)

The Ultimate Crime Fighter is beginning to air on Thursday, October 23, 2008 on Fairchild after Phoenix Rising. UCF is not the greatest series...so many things went wrong and so many things could've been done so much better...it could have been easily mistaken as an "ATV" series. I was pretty disappointed at this series when I was watching it, to the point it made me stop watching it and skipping episodes which is extremely rare for me to do. Besides the obvious like Kevin killing Gigi and Moses killing Kevin, I can't remember exactly what I proposed as changes, but I think it was something like Kevin should have faced his past and admitted to it rather than killing Gigi. It was Kevin and Gigi's second collaboration (first was Life Art) and they took their endings to the two extremes. Moses shouldn't have gone 'insane' and him and Yoyo should've ended up with more. I didn't think "the ultimate crime fighter" was established in any one of the characters in the series, so the series doesn't fit the title....We'll see if I have the time to watch this one again...

October 7th Crits

Tonight, I just feel like turning back in time, I really wish that was possible. Because the crit today was somewhat informal, I didn't prepare what I wanted to say on paper or on cue cards and I just thought out loud last night. When I got up to speak about my 'back wall project' today I didn't know where to start and blanked out and then got nervous and it was probably one of my most unprofessional presentation. The studdering, and the ums and the ahs...I tend to think out loud too and that didn't help, lol.

Okay, so here is what I wanted to say...

"This mesh in here represents the partitioning the man tries to hide himself behind because that was a key element of my story. My story has a sense of squeezing and closing in on the space and I communicated that feeling in my wall by creating this small, tight space with the walls of the drawing 'ballooning' into the space and the mesh arching over. The openings in the mesh are small to allow only little amounts of light in while still preserving the visibility of the 'man' and the '2 girls'. Collision is a recurring theme in my story, with the briefcase, man griping hand onto rod, and holding his other hand on his chest, so I took that theme and captured a 'collision' like a series of frames in my wall design. I played with subtlety and elements at the end are split and ripped apart from their regular forms. Finally, all that happens on that end is hidden from this particular view where everything is smooth and peaceful which is deceiving just like how the man entered the booth on his own will not knowing the consequences."

"My section in the Army Surplus Building has no basement and I only have a crawlspace and since that crawlspace was dark and isn't accessible from directly within my site, I focused on the roof and main floor. On the main floor I spent my longest time in this office space which I enlarged on this poster and on my drawing because the atmosphere was comforting. There is also this interesting colliding of different materials in this one corner that I could tie to my back wall. The back rooms were the complete opposite and the spaces were daunting. On the roof, I cut through the lattice structure that holds up the billboard and in order to experience my site, I had to go over and under and so I represented it in a series of plans that are stacked on top of one another. I organized them as ground level, waist level, and arm's reach. Any questions?"

October Already?

Well one month down and seven more to go! As I would have come to expect, I only made a handful of posts last month because of school.

Steps ending on Friday and Channel A ended on Saturday. The ending of Steps was good, better than Brink of Law. There is an obvious relationship between the two series with Steven, Bernice, and Kate in both. Though the ending was better than Brink of Law, I found the time after competition to the time of the proposal a bit draggy. I mean I knew it was going to happen but they put it of until the absolute very end of it. I wish they showed scenes of the wedding or them getting prepared for it or something. I didn't like Steven's character very much, he seemed to be the playboy type and didn't take the relationship seriously at first and was in denial and then he was hesitant to marry Bernice even when she ask. Bernice was really "hun ga" (eager to marry) and it was funny to see a girl be that way. So 3.75/5.

Channel A was one of my favourite ATV series, no crazy people killing each other or ghosts/goblins. It was a nice romantic series. Having said that, there is still room for improvement...I really liked the beginning but near the end, many new things were introduced and corners were cut. I wish they had developed the relationship between "Sum Keet" and "Ching Jee" a bit more. At first they started because they both felt betrayed, but then realized that that wasn't true love and split. Though I missed a couple of episodes because I was in Toronto, I don't think they showed their point of realization that true love does exist between them. "Sum Keet" seems to like the artist way more than "Ching Jee", and only chose "Ching Jee" because she didn't want to be a work of art. I can see how Ching Jee likes Sum Keet but not the other way around. Anyways, time fore bed...So also 3.75/5.
